This page is an up-to-date guide of my most common lab recommendations for thyroid function and Root Cause testing. I’ve set up self-order options where possible, to help empower people with the information and tools they need to heal.
While I’m a big proponent of taking charge of one’s own health, please remember that it is always best to work with a skilled practitioner who is knowledgeable about functional testing, to interpret your lab results and customize any treatments to your personal needs.

- Comprehensive Stool Analysis – This test evaluates the status of beneficial and imbalanced commensal bacteria, and identifies pathogenic bacteria, fungi, and yeast in your stool.
- Organic Acids Test (OAT) – This comprehensive urine test measures the metabolism of organic acids, which gives insight into metabolic and gut health markers, including intestinal yeast and bacteria overgrowths, toxin accumulation, and nutrient deficiencies.
- Genova:
- GI Effects Comprehensive Profile (Three Day Collection) – This stool sample test uses DNA analysis to go beyond the standard parameters for identifying gastrointestinal disorders. (Note: This test checks for pancreatic elastase.) You can order this test through my Rupa Health or Direct Labs channels.
- Pancreatic Elastase – This stool sample test measures levels of this pancreatic enzyme. A deficiency in pancreatic elastase can lead to fat malabsorption.
- 3 Hour SIBO Lactulose – This breath test checks levels of bacteria in the small intestines. Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) can lead to intestinal permeability and contribute to digestive symptoms. You can order this test through my Rupa Health or Direct Labs channels.
- Diagnostic Solutions:
Infections
- Ulta Labs:
- TP Root Cause Infections Panel – This blood panel that tests for common viral triggers in Hashimoto’s, including Lyme disease, herpes, Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV), cytomegalovirus (CMV), coxsackie B, Bartonella, and Babesia microti.
- TP Root Cause Epstein-Barr Panel – This blood panel provides a comprehensive look at markers for Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV), a common viral trigger in Hashimoto’s.
- EBV-VCA IgG and IgM (viral capsid antigen) – IgG positive means you’ve had or currently have the infection; IgM positive means the infection has been reactivated.
- EBV-EBNA IgG (nuclear antigen) – A positive test result is usually associated with past infection.
- EBV-EA-D IgG (early antigen) – Positive EA IgG may mean you have an active or reactivated infection.
- Igenix:
- Lyme Disease Test – This blood panel tests for Borreliosis/Lyme disease, as well as co-infection(s) with other tick-borne illnesses.
- MicrobiologyDX:
- MARCoNs – This nasal swab test checks for Multiple Antibiotic Resistant Coagulase Negative Staphylococcus (MARCoNS) and other bacterial and fungal infections in the sinuses, as well as biofilms that can create resistance to treatments.
- Realtime Laboratories:
- Molecular Fungal Testing – This urine test checks for mold metabolites, to determine if various fungi have taken up residence in your body.
Nutrient Depletions
- Ulta Labs:
- Root Cause Nutrition Panel – This blood panel checks one’s B12, ferritin, vitamin D, CMP and CBC levels.
- B12 – A nutrient often lacking in Hashimoto’s, that can result in neuropathy, fatigue or problems with digestion.
- Ferritin – An iron storage protein, which when deficient, can lead to symptoms like hair loss, fatigue, and poor thyroid function.
- Vitamin D – An important nutrient for immune system balance. Hashimoto’s patients often have very low vitamin D ranges, and most of my clients who have gotten into remission have optimal levels of this nutrient.
- CMP (Complete Metabolic Panel) and CBC (Complete Blood Count) – These panels reveal your electrolyte levels, as well as how your cells are doing, how the liver and kidneys are functioning, and whether you are at risk for anemia.
- MTHFR – This blood test identifies MTHFR (Methylenetetrahydrofolate Reductase) gene variations, which are common in those with Hashimoto’s and can contribute to a number of issues, including a buildup of toxins, as well as nutrient deficiencies.
- Homocysteine – This blood test checks for elevated homocysteine levels, which are common with MTHFR gene variations. Homocysteine can also tell us the level of inflammation in our bodies, as well as indicate a deficiency in B vitamins.
- Root Cause Nutrition Panel – This blood panel checks one’s B12, ferritin, vitamin D, CMP and CBC levels.
- 23andme:
- The 23andme saliva test kit assesses your genetic profile. You can then upload your test results to geneticgenie.org, which will then tell you if you have specific genetic variations, such as MTHFR.
- Genova:
- NutrEval® FMV w/ Nutrient & Toxic Elements – This urine and blood test provides a functional assessment, to identify nutritional deficiencies and insufficiencies.
- Spectracell:
- Micronutrient Panel – This comprehensive blood test checks one’s levels of micronutrients, such as thiamine and magnesium.
Thyroid Function
- Ulta Labs:
- TP Root Cause Thyroid Panel #1 – This is a comprehensive blood panel for thyroid function that checks Free T3, Free T4, TSH, TPOAb, TgAb, and Reverse T3 levels.

- Thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPO antibodies) and thyroglobulin antibodies (TG antibodies) – These tests measure levels of thyroid antibodies, which are markers of autoimmune hypothyroidism.
- Reverse T3 – This test measures how much free active T3 is able to bind at thyroid receptors. RT3 is produced in stressful situations and binds to thyroid receptors, but turns them off instead of activating them.
- TP Root Cause Thyroid Panel #2 – This is a blood panel for Free T3, Free T4, TSH, TPOAb, and TgAb.
- TP Basic Thyroid Panel – This blood panel checks for Free T3, Free T4, and TSH levels.

Toxins
- Ulta Labs:
- Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP) – This blood test measures levels of the ALP protein. ALP is found in all body tissues, but higher amounts are found in the liver, bile ducts, and bone. Low levels may indicate copper toxicity and/or zinc deficiency.
